Apple’s macOS automatically saves hidden background versions of your local Sketch documents. Whilst this auto-save feature offers a reliable safety net, it quietly consumes gigabytes of drive space over time. Using the System Junk module inside CleanMyMac, you can safely target and review and remove redundant intermediate versions to free up disk space.
Before You Begin
Save and close any open Sketch documents before running the clean-up.
Removing historical versions reduces the number of earlier states available through macOS’s Revert To feature, so make sure important work is backed up first. By default, CleanMyMac preserves the earliest and latest versions while removing redundant intermediate revisions.
Removing all version history for a file completely deletes your ability to use the native “Revert To” feature on existing documents, as detailed in the official Sketch documentation.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Launch CleanMyMac
Open the CleanMyMac application on your Mac.
Step 2: Select the Cleanup Module
Select Cleanup in the sidebar. If you are using the older CleanMyMac X interface, select System Junk instead.
Step 3: Start the Scan
Click Scan at the bottom of the window to begin searching your system files.
Step 4: Access Detailed Results
When the scan finishes, find Document Versions Found and click Review.
Step 5: Locate Document Versions
Select Document Versions in the left pane of the Cleanup Manager. In the right pane, expand Sketch, then review the listed .sketch documents. Use the disclosure arrow beside a document if you want to inspect its individual historical versions before making your selection.
Step 6: Perform the Removal
Click the Clean Up button at the bottom right. CleanMyMac will permanently remove the selected historical revisions without deleting your current Sketch documents.
In this example, CleanMyMac found 12 selected items associated with four local Sketch documents and recovered 1 GB of storage.
